About Us

Our Story

Born from Sacrifice.
Built on Service.

Support Our Soldiers Alabama was founded after Marine Thomas Rivers was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. In response to unimaginable loss, his family turned grief into action — sending care packages to deployed Marines around the world. At its peak, nearly 900 boxes were shipped each year, ensuring no Marine felt forgotten.

Our Focus Today

We are committed to honoring those who have served by connecting churches, volunteers, and communities with veterans in need — especially those facing hardship, homelessness, or isolation.

Our Mission

Serving those who are serving, have served, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Through outreach, fellowship, and partnership, we ensure that no veteran stands alone.

Our Heart for Service

We believe in patriotism — a deep love for our country and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. The men and women who serve in our military embody that patriotism in its purest form. They step forward to defend our nation, protect our liberties, and in some cases, give their lives so that we may live in freedom.

The strength of America has always been built on sacrifice — from our forefathers who framed the Constitution, to generations of service members who have preserved and defended it. The freedoms we cherish today were secured through courage, conviction, and unwavering commitment.

Whether Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Marines — those who serve our country are united by a common calling. They stand watch so that we may rest safely. They serve so that we may remain free.

We owe them gratitude. We owe them respect. And we owe them support — not only while they serve, but long after their uniforms are folded away.

As Scripture reminds us, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

Patriotism is more than flying a flag — though we should do that proudly. It is more than words or ceremonies. True patriotism is action.

While not all of us are called to serve in uniform, we are all called to serve in some way.

Support Our Soldiers Alabama exists to ensure that veterans across our state are honored, supported, and surrounded by community. Through church partnerships, outreach efforts, and engagement with homeless veterans at the Colonnade shelter, we work to make sure no veteran stands alone.

You can express your patriotism by:

• Partnering with us to support veterans in need
• Encouraging your church or Sunday School class to adopt and engage veterans
• Attending and supporting our Memorial Week Banquet
• Volunteering your time to strengthen outreach efforts
• Praying for our service members and veterans
• Teaching the next generation about the sacrifices that protect our freedoms

We may not all wear the uniform — but we can all stand with those who did.
